Japanese rider was known for his aggressive riding style

In this week’s Throwback we dial the time machine back 24 years to 1998. In this photo Takahito Mori leads a talented group of riders in the Elf Fuels AMA 250cc Grand Prix race at Road America in June of that year. Behind Mori are Roland Sands (No. 10), Chuck Sorensen (No. 90), Bobby Keith (No. 6) and Kurtis Roberts (No. 80). Mori led the race at times before a spark plug broke on his Moto Liberty Honda RS250 causing him to DNF. Sands would go on to win the race over Sorensen and Roberts. Mori was a tough competitor who had a reputation for making wild passes, often to the chagrin of many of his fellow racers. More than a few times he would ride past the limits and end up with a wadded motorcycle on the sidelines, but when he held it together Mori was a strong enough talent that he could turn in some excellent performances. He won the AMA 250GP races at Laguna Seca in 1995 and again at Daytona in ’98 and scored a slew of podiums in his five seasons racing in the AMA 250GP class.
